My 10 Best Film of the Decade 01/01/2010
In case you haven't noticed....I like lists. Since the decade has come to an end I think it's appropriate that I post my 10 most favorite films of the past ten years. It took some thinking, and yes it was close, but to be fair to the films that just missed the cut, I've added a few extra flicks at the end because picking just 10 was too hard. So here are my 10 best films of the decade: 10) Mulholland Dr. (2001) 9) Traffic (2000) 8) A Mighty Wind (2003) 7) Mystic River (2003) 6) The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (2001-2003) 5) The 40 Year Old Virgin (2005) 4) The Wrestler (2008) 3) The Departed (2006) 2) The Dark Knight (2008) 1) Pan's Labyrinth (2006) And here are a few that just missed the cut, but are worth a watch none-the-less: - Hot Fuzz (2007) - Requiem for a Dream (2000) - In Bruges (2008) - The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) 1 Comment My Golden Globe Picks 12/30/2009
That's right it's awards season which means I get to play 'professional film picker' again. Without wasting more of your time here's who I think is going to go home with a Golden Globe in the movie categories. Best Motion Picture - Drama: Up in the Air Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy: Nine Best Actor - Drama: Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart Best Actress - Drama: Helen Mirren for The Last Station Best Actor - Musical or Comedy: Robert Downey Jr. for Sherlock Holmes Best Actress - Musical or Comedy: Meryl Streep for Julie & Julia Best Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz for Inglorious Basterds Best Supporting Actress: Anna Kendrick for Up in the Air Best Director: Jason Reitman for Up in the Air Best Screenplay: Up in the Air by Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner Best Original Song: Brothers by Bono Best Original Score: Avatar by James Horner Best Animated Film: Up Best Foreign Language Film: The White Ribbon Q & A with Tim Burton 12/09/2009
These days filmmaker Tim Burton is a really busy man. With his next film Alice in Wonderland in heavy post-production, Tim somehow found time to lend some of his other art to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). Have you heard? New Moon is out today. I for one don't care because the first film in the series Twilight did nothing for me. Sure this date has been circled on fans calendars for months, and there's nothing wrong with that, but how much hype is too much and will all this hype actually hurt the film? I for one hate hype. Although I will admit, if I was a Producer on the project then hype is what I'd be aiming for, but as a die hard movie fan just give me a few decent reviews. That being said, the reviews (by critics who matter) on New Moon aren't what you'd call satisfactory. But that's the beauty of making a movie that's main demographic is teens. No matter what people say about this movie it will still gross over $100 million this opening weekend, and I for one wouldn't be surprised if it reaches $400 million world wide by the end of its run. After all, isn't that the main reason Hollywood made it? Interested in hearing what the fans are saying about New Moon? Just click here. 30 Killer Movie Closing Lines 11/18/2009
Nothing's better than a great line at the end of a movie. Finishing on powerful words makes you want more, and usually can spark up some interesting conversation about the flick you just saw. I came across this article that has collected 30 of some of the greatest closing lines in movie history. I do not agree with the order of many of them, but hey, it's not my list. To read which closing movie lines are the greatest click here. Richard Kelly stormed onto the filmmaking scene in 2001 with his first feature Donnie Darko. Since then he's only directed the 2006 bomb Southland Tales which I personally have not seen mainly due to the horrible reviews, but he hopes to rebound with the release of The Box. The previews are cool and I don't think you can ever go wrong with casting Frank Langella (Masters of the Universe was my favorite film as a child). I found this and thought it was worth sharing. Alfred Hitchcock is one of my favorite filmmakers, and can easily be considered one of the greatest of all time. His films are masterfully made, and it would be tough to find another director who focuses more on the aesthetics of filmmaking then he. October is a perfect month to release this rare video because many of Alfred Hitchcock's films have that eerie feeling to them, something only the month of October can bring. If you haven't heard of the social networking phenomenon Twitter then it's time to wake up. It's rapidly gaining popularity and many people involved in the entertainment industry use it. I came across this short skit involving the characters from 'Seinfeld' and thought it was worth sharing. If you have a minute and would like a good chuckle I suggest you click here. With Halloween just around the corner, and the growing popularity of both iphones and the movie Zombieland, we thought this post was appropriate. I own probably close to 300 movie posters, but not nearly enough that appear on this list. Movie posters, when done well, can give you an idea of what to expect from the movie before you even see a single frame of it. Too often now-a-days the posters for many of the movies that come out simply have the stars face plastered all over them. Though this can be considered good marketing, it's just not interesting.
